PAINTING PRACTICE AS SURRENDER TO OPACITY OF IMPERMANENCE

Welcome to Margot Wilson Painting Studio Practice 2023. Painting enables me to expand and develop my intuitive performance practice. Working with predominantly oils, canvas, and more recently whatever surface is at hand, each layer is applied as a spontaneous performance and tantric dance, sometimes connecting, sometimes not. In the expressionist tradition earlier works were created without a focus or subject, inviting shapes and geometric connections to emerge. As this practice continued the layers and mark transitions invoked the experience of reading an astrological chart. It was at this point the container of astrological geometry and text clicked. These are a few paintings from my studio charting a progression from free-form performance led painting to painting as a channel and vessel of an interconnected emergent universe. I have been an astrologer for over 40-years and naturally think in these multi-dimensional visual terms. Pushing the geometric and harmonic limits of astrological interconnectivity as layers, colour, lines, text is an ongoing practice conversation, one which pushes against abstract formalism and sanitised design. What interests me is the blur and muddy opaqueness of multiple intersections and the moments and flashes that reveal their dimensionality.
